Abstract: The final government notice concerning urban hygiene in Valletta before the enactment of law 1843 seems equally authoritarian. In 1832, Police home inspections discovered that numerous houses in Valletta contained small underground chambers used by residents for disposing of human waste and garbage. Journalist Giovanni Bonello takes an insight into how hygiene improved in Malta during colonial days.
