Abstract: This study explores the multifaceted experiences women hold in the field of archaeology in Malta, focusing on the challenges they face. Although throughout the years women have made significant contributions to the field, specific roles and experiences of women who work in this field, especially within the local context, have not yet been documented or studied. This study employs a qualitative research approach by using semi-structured interviews in order to gather the various contextualised narratives of Maltese female archaeologists. These interviews provide a deep and detailed insight into institutional structures and professional dynamics that shape one’s career in the field. This approach also reveals the challenges, ongoing gender disparities and gender gaps such as the lack of women in leadership positions, and difficulties in balancing work life and personal life. Additionally, the findings show that female archaeologists tend to face barriers that hinder their professional growth and recognition. By shedding light on these issues, this dissertation aims to bridge existing gaps and foster a fairer and more inclusive environment for women working in the local archaeological field. The findings discussed, advocate for systematic changes in the field, together with the encouragement of the development of policies and practices that promote gender equality. Fundamentally, this study also aims to recommend that women’s contributions to the field should be acknowledged and praised.
