| Abstract: | July 26, 2023, was a significant milestone, celebrating the centenary of Oreste Kirkop's birth. Kirkop, who hailed from Hamrun, was the sixth child in a family of ten, born to Jean Chircop and Fortunata Panzavecchia. His journey into music began in wartime shelters, where he recognized his singing potential. In a remarkable achievement, Oreste became the first Maltese performer to sing a leading role at Covent Garden in 1954, taking on the character of the Duke in Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House. The narrative of Oreste Kirkop's life has been explored by journalist Marie Benoit. |
