| Abstract: | OLIVER FRIGGIERI, born in Floriana, Malta in 1947, studied Philosophy and Literature and holds the first M.A. and Ph.D. in Maltese Literature. He addressed about seventy international congresses in various countries, and his poetry was included in some of the major poetry recitals held throughout Europe. Author of numerous books of poetry, criticism, novels, short stories, more than sixty of which have been translated and published in various countries. Author of numerous scholarly articles published in Maltese and international academic journals. Winner of international prizes, including Premio Mediterraneo lnternazionale (Palermo, 1988), and Malta Government Literary Award (1988, 1996, 1997). Member of the National Order of Merit (Government of Malta, 1999). Full Professor and ex-Head of Department of Maltese at the University of Malta (1987-2004). The list of his works includes: "La cultura italiana a Malta - Dun Karm" (Florence), "Storia della letteratura maltese" (Milazzo), "Laz" (Belgrade), "Baruhove Zagate" (Ljubljana), "A Turn of the Wheel" (Paisley), "Minciuna" (Timisoara), "La menzogna" (Genova), "Storie per una sera" (Treviso), "Le rituel du crepuscule" (Paris), "Nous sommes un desir'' (Luxembourg), "A Distraught Pilgrim" (Missouri), "Povesti pentru o seara" (Bucharest), A Malte, histoires du crepuscule" (Paris), "La voce dell'onda" (Alghero), "Koranta and othetr short Stories from Malta" (Malta), "Dizzjunarju ta' Termini Letterarji", "Storja tal-Letteratura Maltija", "Fjuri li Ma Jinxfux", and novels like "Fil-Parlament ma Jikbrux Fjuri" (In Parliament no flowers grow), "Gizimin Ii qatt ma jiftah" (Jasmine .blossoms for all time), "lt-tfal jigu bil-vapuri" (Children come by ship). His book of collected poems (1961- 2001 ), Il-Poeziji Migbura, appeared in 2002. Some of his novels have been set on stage and televised. Many of his poems have been set to music as oratorios, cantatas and hymns. He writes in Maltese, English and Italian. |
