Abstract: With very few exceptions, contemporary commentators on the Maltese landscape consistently linked the dire plight of the Maltese to the greed and mismanagement exhibited by their new colonial authorities. The onset of British rule saw a significant influx of British immigrants who sought jobs, advancement, and financial gain, all of which were drawn from Malta's already limited resources and revenues. Journalist Giovanni Bonello documents the alarming levels of poverty that afflicted Malta during the early 19th century.
