Abstract: This study delves into the experiences of five female substance users in the treatment of the National Drug Agency of the Maldives. Even with strict regulations and cultural expectations, the Maldives faces persistent issues with substance abuse, highlighting the need for targeted treatment interventions, especially tailored for women. Through a qualitative Narrative Inquiry, and using semi structured interviews, the aim was to elucidate the nuanced narratives of female individuals, exploring their struggles, resilience, and the societal and cultural influences shaping their experiences in treatment. Drawing on conceptual frameworks such as Prochaska and DiClemente’s Transtheoretical Model, Gender Schema Theory, and John Dewey’s theory of experience, the study sought to comprehend behavior change, gender roles, and individual experiences within the broader Maldivian social context. The primary themes generated from the interviews were Psychological Challenges; Socioeconomic Disparities; Family Dynamics and Relationships; Legal and Institutional Challenges and Substance use and Rehabilitation. These findings highlight the need for further research as well as gender-specific programs, policies, and support systems.
