To the English Nation. A voice from Malta

Abstract

I here publish, translated into English, an article that appeared in Italian in the "Malta e sue Dipendenze" relatively to the illustrious professor Gaetano Tolino of the Royal University of Naples, who, without any ground, was forbidden to exercise his profession during the few days he staid in Malta, that the independent English public may have a prospectus of the misgoverment of this British Colony.

I must add that such acts of despotism are witnessed every day here, especially when matters of local policy are concerned, our constitution being a farce based on terrorism, which has created dissatisfaction all over the island, and into the cause of which it would be the interest of His Majesty’s Government to inquire seriously seriously before the wound becomes more gangrenous. For my own part I shall not fail now and then making known to the independent English press certain facts that cannot but disgrace any government whatever, however liberal it may be said to be, of which facts the English public are most certainly ignorant.

The public opinion in England is grossly mistaken if it is thought that the British subjects here enjoy the same rights and benefits as those in England. Hence the daily increasing dissatisfaction of the population of this island.
