Abstract: The icon of the Madonna of Filérimos now in the Historic Museum of Cetinje, Montenegro where it is displayed in a splendid gold riza, set with rubies alternating with diamonds, and an eight‐pointed cross in white enamel, is one of the most famed miracle‐working images of the Virgin in history and has an intimate association with both the Knight Hospitallers, who came in contact with it while in Rhodes and (subsequently) with the Imperial Family of Tzarist Russia. The image represents only the head of the Virgin slightly turned in profile, and its diminutive size (44 x 36 cm without the riza) suggests that it is a fragment of a larger painting. This study is concerned with its earliest documented history2 and seeks to reconstruct its original iconography. The numerous myths and legends, most of them of recent fabrication, are ignored.
