| Abstract: | This article by Ryan Caruana was previously submitted as part of ERL 1002 and is being published with the author’s permission. Intergenerational equity (IGE) serves as a cornerstone of environmental justice, highlighting the obligation of the present generation to preserve the environment for the benefit of those to come. Grounded in principles of conserving options, quality, and equity, the concept emphasizes shared rights and responsibilities across generations. While international frameworks such as the Stockholm Declaration and national laws like Malta’s Sustainable Development Act recognize the importance of IGE, significant gaps in implementation persist. Advocating for the appointment of guardians to represent future generations, the discussion underscores the need for their voices in policymaking to ensure sustainable development and a fair environmental legacy. |
