Abstract: This study is, above all, concerned with the icon of the Virgin of Damascus in Rhodes and the harbour-town of Birgu where the Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem established its first base in Malta. Its subsequent history and cultic magnetism in Valletta and the saga of its protection from destruction in the blitz of the Second World War are well known and published1 and are, as a result, only given a cursory mention. Its main concern is the phenomenon of its miracle-working fame which was shared in common by Orthodox and Uniate Greeks and Roman Catholics.
