Abstract: During the First World War, Malta was an excellent naval base and hospital for the Allies. However, apart from these two vital roles, Malta was also used to house several prisoners of war hailing from or allied with the Central Powers. The first prisoners in Malta were civilian internees, however as the war progressed several ex-combatants were also confined here. Over two thousand prisoners were being kept here by 1918. Verdala Camp in Cottonera provided barrack accommodation for officers, whilst St Clement’s Retrenchment and Fort San Salvatore held non-commissioned officers, common soldiers and civilian internees.
