Abstract: The history of small countries is normally unknown to the outer world and tends to be equally ignored or underestimated. Common prejudices largely contribute to the impression that no events of consequence actually happen in such restricted territories. The truth is that when a land, whatever its dimensions, is a complete entity in itself, its fate is as fortunate or unfortunate as that of any other country's. Even in small countries people suffer and die for a cause, and movements take shape and grow as they do in the major states. When a small country is an island, it is more difficult for people to gain attention and the esteem they merit.
