Abstract: Many microorganisms form part of the normal, healthy microbiota of the gut for maintaining health and avoiding pathological states. It not only deters the colonisation of pathogens, but also helps in the metabolism of various nutrients. This literature review provides a general overview of the composition of the microbiome in the gut and its role in carbohydrate metabolism.
