Abstract: As social work academics, we stress to our students the critical role of the proper use of self in practice. This concept involves integrating professional expertise—such as training, knowledge, and techniques—with personal attributes like individual values, personality, and lived experiences. This integration is a defining feature of skilled social work. Through the use of self, practitioners aim to engage with clients in a manner that is both authentic and sincere, while simultaneously upholding the ethical standards and core values of the profession. Central to this practice is the development of self-awareness—an understanding of oneself as the primary tool in client interactions. One of the most effective means of achieving this awareness is through reflective practice. Social workers must intentionally examine their emotions and experiences, much like unpacking and reviewing the contents of a suitcase, and thoughtfully consider their emotional responses and reactions to specific situations and individuals. Reflection and reflexivity are therefore indispensable, enabling practitioners to become conscious of how they are perceived by others and ensuring their work remains both ethical and responsive.
