Abstract: Humanity has always felt the need to resort to a higher power to attain or achieve his wishes and give thanks. From times unknown man has been known to ‘look up’ to a ‘higher superior being’ as a means of praying. The act of devotion and worship of a supreme being, created the need for a ‘special space’ outside of man’s normal abode. These spaces were sanctified to provide not only a profound spiritual meaning but also personal empowerment to believers. Sacred spaces become sacred because people consider them different from ordinary spaces and serve the community by providing respite to the various users. Religious space is powerful as it focuses the attention of the believer on the divine and helps in the creation of relationships within the worshipping community.
