Abstract: The interpretation of Malta during the First World War is a subject which has attracted very little academic study. The island, then a British fortress, was on the fringes of the European conflict, and escaped fighting and bombing. In the Maltese collective memory this war is subdued by the Second World War during which the Maltese endured prolonged aerial bombardment which caused much destruction, suffering and death.
