Abstract: Following the triumph at Alamein in October 1942 and the defeat of the Nazi-Fascist forces in North Africa, it became merely a matter of time before the exposed 'soft underbelly of Europe', specifically Sicily and Italy, would be selected by the Allies prior to any other substantial invasion force being deployed against the Axis powers in other regions. The successful execution of such an invasion was destined to have significant repercussions. It led to the collapse of Mussolini's administration and his subsequent arrest.
