Abstract: Auxetics exhibit the counter-intuitive behaviour of expanding when stretched and contracting when compressed (negative Poisson’s ratios). In most cases, the presence or otherwise of auxetic behaviour depends on the geometry of the system under study, and the way this geometry deforms when submitted to a stress, i.e. the deformation mechanism.
