| Abstract: | Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a frequent clinical issue that can cause significant distress for patients. To date, there is limited or no published data, either through selfadministered questionnaires or dental clinical examination, that explores the prevalence of DH in the Maltese adult population. Objectives: The objectives of the present work are to estimate DH prevalence and characteristics, and to explore the associated factors, in the general Maltese population. Materials & Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional questionnaire study was designed and distributed among the general adult population on the Maltese Islands. Selection criteria included subjects over the age of 18, that were partially or fully dentate and were Maltese nationals. Data obtained was inputted in Microsoft Excel and SPSS software was used to analyze it. Results: The prevalence of sensitive teeth (ST) during the previous 12 months reported by the sample of 545 participants was 59.4% [95% CI: 55.0-63.5%]. There were statistically significant associations between ST and female gender, presence of untreated oral problems, absence of a period of frequent vomiting, and not using a hard bristled manual toothbrush (p<0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of DH, primarily presenting as discomfort, is high in the Maltese adult population. This research indicates that local dental professionals are likely to encounter DH often, and efforts should be made in minimizing its overall impact on the population. Clinical Significance: A deeper understanding of the burden of DH and its associated factors can help in planning resources to alleviate or prevent discomfort arising from this condition, while also providing guidance for dentists and patients to combat DH effectively. |
