| Abstract: | This dissertation explores the psychological impact of non-elite youth sports participation among Maltese individuals aged 18 to 30, aiming to examine both the benefits and challenges that shape their experience. While sports is often associated with physical fitness, this study demonstrates its broader influence on identity formation, emotional regulation, social connection, and the development of life skills. The literature review highlighted how youth benefit from participation through improved self-esteem, goal setting, time management, and discipline, but also how some may experience anxiety, injuries, performance pressure, and burnout. Through an online questionnaire completed by 121 respondents, the study collected quantitative data on how youth athletes perceive their experiences in non-elite sports, an area often underrepresented in academic research. Most participants reported that sport significantly improved their self-confidence and provided a strong sense of accomplishment. They also cited social benefits such as teamwork and connection, alongside long-term positive habits like perseverance and motivation to continue sport into adulthood. However, the findings also revealed concerns, particularly the mental strain caused by injuries, the fear of failure, and emotional fatigue, especially when adequate external support from family and coaches was lacking. While many respondents described their families and coaches as supportive, a notable portion expressed neutral or even negative experiences, underscoring the importance of an encouraging environment in maintaining psychological wellbeing. When asked about changes needed to increase youth engagement in sport, many participants emphasised the importance of more accessible and affordable opportunities, improved facilities, and greater encouragement within schools and communities. In light of these findings, this dissertation argues that sports is not only a tool for physical fitness but powerful platforms for holistic personal growth. The research ultimately offers a rare local perspective on a globally relevant issue and highlights the urgency of creating inclusive, long-term policies that empower youth through meaningful, supported, and accessible sporting experiences. By understanding what motivates youth to stay engaged in sport and identifying the psychological barriers they face, this study provides valuable recommendations for educators, policymakers, coaches, and families who play a role in shaping Malta’s sporting future. |
