Abstract: Saffo is a lyric tragedy in three acts. A poet called Saffo sings against the practice of throwing criminals and undesirables from a cliff on the island of Leucates, hoping that the god Apollo would catch them before they drowned in the sea. The god's high priest, Alcandro, swears revenge, leading to tragic events. [Excerpt.]
