| Abstract: | At Kenilworth Castle, the Earl of Leicester hides his secret marriage to Amelia when Queen Elizabeth arrives as his guest. Amelia is confined and threatened by Leicester’s scheming follower Varney, but eventually discovered by the Queen. Though angered by Leicester’s betrayal, Elizabeth shows mercy, forgives the lovers, and allows their union. [Excerpt.] |
