Abstract: This study aimed to fill in a research gap around the experience and needs in the immediate moments following unexpected loss. This qualitative inquiry utilised a biopsychosocial framework and the theory of locus of control to understand the nuances of bereavement processes. Seven participants aged between 25 and 61 were recruited through healthcare professionals with a minimum of one year post loss and a maximum of three years for recollection purposes. Reflexive thematic analysis was the selected methodology to capture participants’ experiences and the emerging data was analysed accordingly. Findings indicated that the definition of unexpected loss remains debated and consideration for the significance of the person being lost should be prioritised instead. Participants indicated communication and information lacunae that exist within healthcare settings. Findings described institutional limitations to exist beyond the practice of healthcare professionals and participants called for structured bereavement care to be implemented. This recommendation was based on participants’ experience of inefficient formal support. The study demonstrated the biopsychosocial and the theory of locus of control frameworks to be essential in understanding participants’ needs. Future research was recommended to explore the effectiveness of best practice approaches in bereavement care.
