Abstract: This publication stems from the ECML project "Whole school language profiles and policies (ensemble)," aimed at fostering plurilingualism and linguistic diversity in European schools. The introduction by Antoinette Camilleri Grima sets the international context, referencing the Council of Europe's Guide for the Development of Language Education Policies in Europe (2003). It emphasizes shifting from nation-state linguistic homogeneity to promoting societal multilingualism and individual plurilingual competence for social cohesion. The text advocates whole-school development, transforming schools from formal organizations (Gesellschaft) to communities (Gemeinschaft) through shared responsibility, leadership, and partnerships with parents, teachers, learners, and communities. It outlines the project's three phases (research, workshop in Graz 2005, and networking), presents case studies from across Europe illustrating parental involvement, minority language revitalization (e.g., Sorbian, Meankieli), bilingual programs, and teacher roles. Key questions addressed include ensuring home-school linguistic continuity, valuing all languages regardless of status, and tackling implementation challenges. The publication includes a CD-ROM with additional case studies, tools, and PowerPoint presentations to support schools in developing plurilingual policies.
