| Abstract: | Underlying all three categories in this publication is the aim to develop the cognitive processes of individual students which they employ when engaging with language, culture and their own learning. These cognitive processes, which are employed to deal with new information, can be seen as providing a bridge to awareness in general. Their relevance to the three topics under discussion (authenticity, learner autonomy, cultural awareness) is outlined, followed by examples of cognitive strategies such as comparing, contrasting, discovering, completing the linguistic and cultural picture, explaining cause and effect, accepting differences, being creative, and solving problems. Textbook writers and teachers are encouraged to incorporate these processes into classroom tasks and activities. |
