Abstract: In light of the severe mental health consequences associated with being exposed to a death, this dissertation explores the psychological effects left on witnesses of familial death, through the perspective of professionals. Drawing focus on children who are exposed to the homicide of a parent, a complex form of trauma with lasting psychological and cognitive effects. This study intends to examine the short- and long-term psychological consequences, the disruption of daily life and the coping mechanisms these children may adapt after the trauma. A qualitative approach was adopted, gathering data though semi-structured interviews, with five professionals who shared their professional experiences or expertise on the subject. Findings of this research reveal that although the occurrence of such trauma is relatively uncommon, the psychological effects left are profound, often manifesting in PTSD, depressive disorders and other traumatic symptoms. The results highlight the severe consequences of these mental health condition being unaddressed, leading to long-term cognitive impairment, and suicidal thoughts. Moreover, secondary victimisation adds another layer of harm, through the Criminal Justice System, the withholding of truth by family members and stigma perpetuated through social media.
