| Abstract: | Stalking is a pervasive and psychologically damaging crime that is often underestimated within legal and societal frameworks. The present study explores the complex psychological effects of stalking on victims, particularly the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural consequences they endure. Using a qualitative approach, the research involved semi-structured interviews with professionals experienced in victim support, policing, and trauma therapy, alongside the analysis of the Tracey Morgan case study. The study aims to fill a significant gap in Maltese research regarding stalking victimisation. Key findings reveal that stalking is closely tied to coercive control and can escalate to severe outcomes, including physical violence and femicide. Victims often experience long-term trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, and social withdrawal. Institutional and societal responses to stalking were found to be inconsistent, with a need for systemic improvements in law enforcement training, public awareness, and multi-agency collaboration. The study contributes to the understanding of stalking’s deep psychological impacts and highlights the urgent need for more comprehensive victim support structures in Malta. Recommendations for future research and policy reform are also discussed. |
