Behind the screen : profiling money laundering syndicates in the online gambling landscape

Abstract

This research study elaborates on the tactics used by criminal syndicates to launder money through the online gambling industry. This research study initially reviews already recognised literature which will ultimately form the foundation of this study. The aforementioned literature along with the responses gathered from participants will portray a comparison, of the techniques used by syndicates to infiltrate illegitimate money through this industry and how does regulatory bodies combat these techniques. Said literature recognises the commencement of other illegal activities which facilitate money laundering activities. A qualitative approach entailing semi-structured interviews was adopted with professionals in this field. This method enabled the researcher to acquire accurate and reliable findings, that could have not been acquired from any other sort of approaches. It is evident that this type of crime does exist in Malta, and it has also affected its reputation, this was portrayed in its addition within the grey listing category. Despite its recognition by several regulatory bodies, it seems that enforcement measures are not being adopted by all jurisdictions. Therefore, it has been recommended to invest and strengthen internal ties to ensure that regulatory bodies are equipped with the necessary resources to collaborate with external counterparts.
