Unlocking English for young learners of science : a self-access resource of science worksheets and answers for learners in years 7 & 8

Abstract

These worksheets are intended to help learners with the English language aspect of the science content that they learn at school. The content is based largely on the coursebooks used in schools and is organised according to the Learning Outcomes for Years 7 and 8. A number of science units and subject foci are represented, as well as experiments and laboratory reports that are part of the curricular requirements. The science content is tackled from the perspective of an English language teacher who provides support in the form of tasks and activities that help learners improve their comprehension, their writing skills, and their grasp of the language of science. Learners can access these worksheets before their science lessons to prime themselves for the lesson and enhance their learning, or after the lesson as a form of consolidation of the learning. Intended as a self-access resource, answers are provided in a separate document. Learners are encouraged to work through the worksheets independently before consulting the answers as this practice fosters problem-solving skills and encourages autonomous learning.
