Abstract: Maltese culture, shaped by diverse historical influences, is at risk of being overlooked in the digital era. This dissertation explores how digital games can serve as a medium for cultural preservation and education, focusing on the development of Kċina Maltija, a digital educational game that introduces players to Maltese heritage through interactive gameplay. The study investigates the role of game-based learning in enhancing engagement and knowledge retention, particularly in the context of food as a cultural learning tool. Using a practice-based research approach, the game is designed to integrate traditional Maltese cuisine with quiz-based mechanics, reinforcing learning through trial and error. The development process involved an iterative design approach, transitioning from a 3D concept to a 2D format using GDevelop, to improve programme accessibility and efficiency. Challenges such as coding limitations, resolution scalability, and balancing engagement with educational value were addressed through research and adaptation. It is designed to be played on both desktop and mobile formats. The game will be available both online and as an app. While the project successfully combines cultural knowledge with gameplay, opportunities for future expansion include incorporating broader cultural themes beyond cuisine. Kċina Maltija serves as a prototype for further exploration into the use of gamification in preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
