| Abstract: | The article looks at some of the earliest surviving records that mention Gozo. These show that, in the early years of the Order of St John, Gozo was often used as a place to send unwanted or troublesome people. Using scattered entries from official registers, the author shows how the island was governed and controlled, and how its history can only be reconstructed from brief and indirect references. |
