Abstract: The article investigates a sensational account of multiple murders said to have taken place in Malta in 1672. By comparing pamphlets and archival records, the author shows that the story was entirely fabricated and later reused in other European cities with only minor changes. The case reveals how false crime narratives were deliberately marketed as true history in early modern Europe.
