| Abstract: | This article examines newly uncovered archival evidence showing that Grand Master Jean de Valette had at least one illegitimate son, Barthelemy de Valette, later legitimised by King Charles IX of France. It explores the legal, social, and moral implications of illegitimacy in the 16th century and how this hidden episode complicates the traditional image of de Valette as an austere religious leader. |
