Abstract: John Hookham Frere (1769–1846) was described as “one of the most influential members of Malta’s nineteenth century intellectual scene” and his sojourn in Malta between 1821 up to his death in 1846 “was marked by encyclopaedic intellectual activity” whose literary legacy is still with us today. It was during his stay here, or rather, thanks to his stay here, as one of his Maltese biographers put it, that he completed four Greek-to-English translations of Aristophanes’ comedies in metrical verse, which he started while he was still in England, and several other translations of classical and Biblical excerpts from the original languages.
