Abstract: This article surveys the artistic and architectural heritage of Città Vittoriosa (Birgu), highlighting medieval churches, palaces, fortifications, and significant works of painting and sculpture that reflect the city’s early European character. It argues that Birgu played a leading role in the westernisation of Malta through sustained cultural and artistic exchange long before the arrival of the Knights of St John.
