Abstract: For centuries, at the porous threshold between dreaming and waking, a mysterious creature has waited in the shadows, not to haunt us, but to guard us. The Baku (獏 or 貘), a legendary chimera from Japanese folklore, occupies a unique position in the mythological imagination. Neither demon nor deity, the Baku is summoned to perform a simple but profound act: the consumption of nightmares. In doing so, it o!ers not just relief from bad dreams, but a sense of spiritual and emotional safety. As cultural boundaries shi" and iconography evolves, the Baku continues to thrive, not just in ghost stories and folktales, but in the bold lines and evocative colour palettes of tattoo art. These research notes follow the Baku through its metamorphoses: from its Chinese roots to its Japanese reinvention, from literary references to its reincarnation as body art, highlighting the symbolic weight it carries for those who call upon its protection.
