| Abstract: | As far back as 1982, the EU Commission encouraged member states to increase the presence of women in decision-making areas as part of a wider strategy towards the promotion of gender equality. The EU Commission continued reiterating the importance of this through a series of action programmes, roadmaps, pacts and strategy plans, with the most recent strategy underlining this, namely the ‘A Union of Equality: Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025’ (Preti & di Bella, 2023). The current European Gender Equality Strategy specifically calls on EU Member States to develop Gender Equality Plans, or GEPs, that fulfil a number of gender equality-related criteria, with one of the goals being gender balance in decision-making (European Commission, 2020).
