Abstract: Kylie Aquilina reviews Matthew Shirfield’s solo exhibition, The Dirge, which reinterprets the Faustian myth to critique contemporary culture’s pursuit of success and power. The article highlights how Shirfield’s charcoal works juxtapose traditional Maltese Good Friday processions with haunting, monochrome imagery to suggest a modern loss of faith and the repetitive nature of human suffering.
