Abstract: Caregivers’ perceptions regarding the impact of Home Economics education on their children’s life skill development form the focus of this study. The research explores how caregivers in Maltese secondary schools interpret the purpose, value, and contemporary relevance of Home Economics, and how they believe the subject contributes to the development of cognitive, interpersonal, self-management, and practical life skills. A quantitative online questionnaire was completed by 100 caregivers. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to summarise response patterns, while optional open-ended comments provided additional insight. Caregivers rated a wide variety of life skills as highly important for adolescent development, particularly critical thinking, communication, collaboration, responsibility, nutritional literacy, financial capability and sustainability awareness. Most participants perceived Home Economics as a meaningful and relevant subject that supports wellbeing, informed decision-making and everyday competence. Student engagement and subject choice were influenced by gender expectations, awareness of the scope of Home Economics, inclusion needs, school provision and caregiver attitudes. The findings suggest that greater subject visibility, clearer communication with families and more consistent inclusive provision would strengthen engagement and understanding. Recommendations include promoting the modern aims of Home Economics, enhancing collaboration between schools and caregivers, and ensuring curriculum implementation reflects contemporary life demands and sustainability priorities. The study reinforces the significance of Home Economics as a life-skills pathway within Maltese secondary education and highlights its potential to support students’ independence and everyday wellbeing.
