Abstract: Saviour Azzopardi chronicles the tragic World War II story of Maltese Royal Navy steward Domenico D'Agostino, who became trapped in the wreckage of HMS Grafton on May 29, 1940, during the Dunkirk evacuation. To save him from drowning as the ship sank, a British officer shot him, a secret kept for decades by his brother Carmelo, who survived the ordeal and a subsequent four-and-a-half-year stint as a German prisoner of war.
