Abstract: This qualitative study delved into the lived experiences of Maltese families, focusing on how working parents collaborate with grandparents in child-rearing. The dual perspectives of parents and grandparents involved in co-parenting were distinctively examined, through two focus groups: one with three couples (six parents) and another with six grandparents, selected through purposive sampling. The methodology chosen was interpretative phenomenological analysis. Six superordinate themes emerged, highlighting the intricate and often overlooked co-parenting dynamics. Despite some parents utilizing formal childcare services, grandparental support was found to be indispensable for managing work-family responsibilities. Grandparents experienced fulfillment and formed strong bonds with their grandchildren. Power imbalances, conflict, and tensions from juggling multiple demands were also encountered by parents and grandparents. These experiences were characterized by entanglements and double binds, where any decision seemed to lead to unpleasant outcomes. Therefore, participants expressed a desire for change, also noting the impact on children. Family-friendlier policies and suggestions for future practice and research were discussed at the end of the study.
