Abstract:  This dissertation delves into the multifaceted nature of vernacular photography within the socio-economic environment of the Maltese islands in the mid- to late 20th century. By analysing Maltese contemporary society through photographs, one is presented with the minor yet significant aspects of mundane life during a transitional period in Malta's history. The study aims to explore how these cultural and social changes are reflected in the themes and subject matter portrayed. Furthermore, through outlining key themes and aspects, various anthropological, sociological, and philosophical underpinnings of vernacular photography are brought forward, shaping perceptions of reality. The review of the literature highlights the role of photography as a medium for societal remembrance and cultural identity preservation. A semi-structured qualitative approach was adopted so as to gain insight from various individuals with a background in photography, archiving, and anthropology within a Maltese context. Successively, the results acquired through the research provide the reader with insight on the contribution and role of photography within Maltese society, as well as the emotional and historical significance it conveys throughout generations.
