| Abstract: | This article examines the use of amulets, magical formulas and protective charms in seventeenth-century Malta, drawing on records of the Inquisition to illustrate popular beliefs concerning protection from physical danger and evil influences. It also discusses the Church’s response to such practices and compares these historical superstitions with surviving folk customs and devotional practices in modern Malta. |
