Abstract: In a two-part article, Joseph Busuttil details his experience as the first Maltese voluntary helper (hospitalero voluntario) at a parish hostel (albergue) in the Spanish village of Bercianos del Real Camino along the Camino de Santiago. The author explains the history, traditions, and administrative routines of the 800-kilometre pilgrimage route. He also reflects on the diverse global backgrounds and motivations of the hundreds of pilgrims seeking shelter during his two-week service.
