| Abstract: | Naming homes is a fairly recent custom in Malta and Gozo. By choosing a name for their home, the owners are expressing pride and also their interests, sentiments and tastes. House names in Gozo display baptismal names, surnames, nicknames, devotion, love of animals, birds or fish, hobbies, local landmarks, foreign lands and, most typical of all, nostalgia for the land where one lived and worked as an emigrant before returning to Gozo. A particular characteristic is that these names are written in English, Maltese, Italian, French and other languages. This paper is a translated version of: Brincat, G. (2009), updated, revised and extended by J.M. Brincat and G. Baldacchino. |
