Abstract: This study analyses probation officer’s perspectives on the use of non-custodial sentencing options found within the Maltese criminal justice system. With alternatives to imprisonment gaining a crucial role within contemporary sentencing policies, understanding how they are applied into practice by the professionals overseeing them is essential. A qualitative research approach was taken, including semi-structured interviews with five probation officers working within Malta’s Probation and Parole department. The data collected was analysed through thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and insight from participants’ professional experiences. The findings highlight the multifaceted role of probation officers which includes protecting the community and the balance between care and control. Participants highlighted the importance of structured supervision, professional relationships and motivating the offender in support of a behavioural change whilst managing a challenging caseload and intervening with sanctions when necessary. This study contributes to a clear understanding from the lens of professionals overseeing this process on a day-to-day basis as to how these sanctions are implemented within the Maltese criminal justice system.
