Abstract: Human health depends on a complex interplay between biology, lifestyle, and environment. Sleep is one of the most fundamental physiological activities in humans and animals, and a normal sleep cycle is crucial for maintaining overall health. However, sleep disorders are increasingly becoming a major mental health issue affecting individuals and society, as well as contributing factors to the onset of other diseases. Human beings are inherently social creatures, and the neurochemical foundations of social connection are crucial for understanding how we interact, bond, and maintain relationships.
Among the most critical biological regulators are neurotransmitters, chemical messengers that shape not only the brain function but also the quality of our emotional, physical, and social lives. Serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) stand out as central players, guiding processes such as mood regulation, stress response, sexual function, and social bonding. When these systems fall out of balance, the consequences can manifest as mental health disorders, sleep disturbances, or weakened social engagement.
Recent advances in neuroscience highlight that neurotransmitter balance is not fixed and it can be modulated through lifestyle choices. Interventions that improve sleep quality and restore social connection can help restore this balance and, in turn, optimize overall well-being. These interventions align with the modern medical paradigm of Predictive Diagnostics, Targeted Prevention, and Personalization of Medical Services (3PM), a framework designed to predict health risks, prevent disorders before they manifest, and customise treatments to individual needs.
This chapter explores the intricate relationship between neurotransmitter balance and the lifestyle pillars: sleep and social connection. By weaving together biological mechanisms with practical strategies, it outlines a holistic approach to achieving mental and physical health.
