Abstract: The mortality and morbidity resulting from arterial thrombo-embolic complications is very high and well known to all. The frequently associated, or resulting, poor general condition of the patient often precludes, or renders very hazardous, any possible surgical intervention. Anti-coagulant therapy, though very useful, can only be expected to prevent or minimize secondary thrombosis following the arterial embolism, but cannot be depended upon to remove an occlusion due to an intravascular clot.
