Abstract: In this article, the author describes Birkirkara as a hub for potters throughout the early 20th century and before. Interviews with descendants of potters recount how they used to prepare the clay for the production of household goods made of pottery. The firing process, occuring in kilns found inside the potters' homes, is also described by the author. Traditional mortar known as 'deffun' was made as a by product of the pottery industry. Fragments found in kilns and broken pieces of pottery where purchased by the 'deffuniera' to be able to create waterproof mortar for Maltese roofs.
