Abstract: In 1644 the Knights of Malta conducted a naval battle against the Ottoman Empire. After many lives lost, the Knights managed to win the battle and collected the bounty which consisted of gold, coin, precious jewels, prisoners and slaves. Among the people brought back to Malta was a young mother with a 2 year old boy. It resulted that this woman and her son where part of the Sultan's harem and the boy his heir. The Sultan did everything he could to bring them back, including paying ransoms etc... However, the Knights thought otherwise and eventually sent the boy to live with the Dominicans where he was eventually baptised as Domenico Osman di San Tommaso
